Paoli/ Daylesford


round 1760 Joshua Evans founded the Paoli Inn. The town of Paoli later grew around this inn. The Pennsylvania Railroad began utilizing horse-drawn wagons in 1836. Paoli became the western terminus of commuter trains coming from Philadelphia to the Main Line, and the "Paoli Local" became iconic in the western suburbs.

Paoli is located in Chester County, and is situated in portions of three townships: Easttown, Tredyffrin and Willistown. Today, Paoli residents are served by both The Tredyffrin Easttown School District and the Great Valley School District.

Paoli is home to many interesting points of interest. In the late 1950's Daylesford Priory was begun on the east coast on the old "Cassatt" estate. In the early 60's that property was sold and about 120 acres were purchased and Daylesford Abbey and seminary was erected there in Paoli.

Waynesborough, home to Revolutionary War hero, Major General Anthony Wayne is a magnificent Georgian style country manor located in Paoli. Guided tours are available from mid March through mid December.

Wharton Esherick (1887-1970) was a sculptor who worked primarily in wood. Esherick was recognized in his lifetime by his peers as the "dean of American craftsmen" for his leadership in developing non-traditional designs, and encouraging and inspiring artists/craftspeople by example. His greatest creation was his home and studio, outside of Valley Forge Pennsylvania. The buildings evolved over forty years as Esherick lived and worked there. In 1972 the studio was converted into the Wharton Esherick Museum.

Immaculata University founded in 1920, was the first Catholic College for women in the Philadelphia area. Immaculata Univeristy rests on the ground where the Revolutionary War Battle known as the "Battle of the Clouds" was fought on September 16, 1777. The Battle was named for the north-easterner that disabled guns and spoiled ammunition and was literally a wash out.

Paoli Hospital located on Route 30 is a fast growing non-profit hospital servicing the Chester County community.
